Field Trip - Tuesday: Our field trip to Earnest Shepherd Youth Center is Tuesday. We will leave at 9:15am so please don't be late to school. Each participant will need a sack lunch, a water bottle, and possibly sunscreen. I will have bug spray if it is needed. Students should wear active outdoor clothing appropriate for that day's temperature. Layered clothing is a good idea. They should also wear closed toed athletic footwear. They should also bring a small backpack or bag to carry all of this with them. Their school backpack will be fine, but a smaller backpack or slingbag would be helpful if you have it as they will be carrying it around all day. I will send out an email early Tuesday morning if it will be cancelled due to bad weather.

MAP testing: 5th Grade MAP testing will begin on May 1st and last for about 2 weeks. This can be an overwhelming time for students so I would like to lessen the stress by having parents make a small encouraging poster to hang in the classroom. Posters should be roughly 11x17 inches and should have a personal message of encouragement for the MAP test. You can deliver these to the office or send them in with your child. I will send home a blank sheet of construction paper with every student if you would like to use it, but you are free to come up with your own poster.

In addition, students enjoy having a snack before/after the test to decompress. Not every student brings a snack every day, so I would like to invite you to consider donating a classroom snack for each day of the test. Please go HERE to sign up to donate snacks. You may send in snacks anytime over the next two weeks. We have 24 students and one peanut allergy.

Take Your Child to Work Day: I am sending home a permission slip for this day which is Thursday, April 27th. Students can participate without a permission slip, but they will be counted absent for that day. I would appreciate it if you could send these back ASAP because I will be gone that day, and it will help me with my planning if I know how many students will be here that day. Students will not miss any critical work or new information that day.

5th Grade Picnic and Recognition Night: May 18 is a big day at Kellybrook for 5th grade families. We will be having our 5th grade picnic from 12:30-1:30pm and our 5th grade recognition night from 7-8pm. I am sending home RSVP slips for the recognition night and lunch order forms for the picnic. You may bring whatever food you would like for the picnic, but we wanted to allow you to order a school sack lunch if that was more convenient. KB siblings are also invited but must fill out a permission slip to give to their teachers so that they can leave their own classrooms during that time. You may also bring your own lawn chairs, but we will have tables and chairs set up as well.

Fieldtrip: We have enough volunteers for our Earnest Shepherd field trip, but there is room if anyone else would like to volunteer. Volunteers will be assigned to the same group as their children. The only catch is that you would need to arrive at the camp at 7am for training before the classes arrive around 9:30am. Our field trip is on April 25th.

Field Trip: I have sent home two permission slips for our April 25th field trip to Earnest Shepherd Youth Center. One form is for the center (white) and one form is for the school district (blue). Please fill these out and return them to school in the next couple of weeks. Also, students will need a sack lunch. I have also included a sack lunch form if you would like to purchase a sack lunch from our cafeteria. Data Binders and Grade Cards are coming home tonight. Please take time to ask your student what they are most proud of regarding their learning as well an area they need to work on a little more. We are now in our last quarter of elementary school. Please continue to encourage them at home to give there best effort all of the way through.

Thank you for attending our Leader Showcase this week. I am very proud of the learning that has taken place in our classroom this year. Your children are excellent students.

Volunteers still needed for our Field trip to Earnest Shepherd Youth Center. We will be attending Earnest Shepherd's Radical Challenge on April 25th. We are needing 3 more volunteers to help with the activities that day. This will be a working field trip for volunteers who must arrive at 7am that morning for training (located just NE of Liberty Hospital). I will send more information regarding permission slips closer to the date. If you would be willing to volunteer, please email me. First consideration will be given to parents who have not gone on a field trip with us this year. I will send more information regarding student permission slips closer to the date.

Welcome Letter

Dear 5th Grade Friends,

Welcome to fifth grade! My name is Mr. Evans. I’m so excited to have you in my class! This is my 18th year of teaching. I have taught fifth, fourth and second grades.  I have been teaching in the Liberty Public School District for 12 years. I graduated with my teaching degree in 1999 from Park University. In 2002, I obtained my master’s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. I am married and have two teenage boys, one of which will be leaving home this year to attend the University of Missouri. In my free time I love to play board games, read, exercise, and hang out with my family. My favorite thing to do is spend time learning with my students! I’m so excited to begin the new school year, and I hope you are too!  Fifth grade will be a blast, and I will work hard to prepare you for middle school!

Sincerely,

      Mr. Evans
